Christmas shopping for tweens is a whole different ball game, isn't it?
I'm Ash, mum of two boys aged 9 and 12, and every year I find myself asking the same question: What do you buy kids who are getting too old for toys but aren't quite teenagers yet?
My boys are at that age where they're all about the beach, swimming, fishing, hanging out with mates and anything outdoors.
And living in Australia, Christmas means SUMMER! So rather than filling their stockings with things they'll forget about by Boxing Day, I'm focusing on gifts they'll actually use throughout the school holidays and beyond.
I've put together my Christmas gift list for boys aged 9–12, plus a girls' version for anyone shopping for daughters, nieces or granddaughters.
Of course, every kid is different, so mix and match depending on what they're into!
Christmas gift ideas for boys aged 8–12
If your boys are anything like mine, they'll spend as much of the summer as possible in the water or outside.
Here's what's on my list this year:
-
Caps and hats: You can never have too many, especially when they keep disappearing!
-
Speedos: A summer essential for swimming lessons, the pool and beach days.
-
Lunch bag: A fresh insulated lunch bag for school, sport and adventures. We have some AWESOME lunch bags at Sinchies, including MontiiCo, b.box and Sachi.
-
YETI drink bottle: Something sturdy to keep their water cool on hot summer days.
-
Lunch box: My boys are growing, and so are their appetites! A good-sized lunch box is something they'll use every single school day.
-
Beach towel: A new towel for swimming, beach days and holidays.
-
Pool floatie: Because you're never too old to float around the pool!
-
Swimming goggles: Always handy to have a spare pair.
-
Rashie: Essential for our Australian summers.
-
Fishing shirt: A great gift for boys who love getting outdoors.
-
Boardshorts: You can never have enough pairs over summer!
The best part? So many of these gifts are practical things I'd be buying throughout the year anyway.
Christmas gift ideas for girls aged 8–12
Now, I don't have girls myself, but I've put together a similar list for girls in that same tricky tween age group.
Think summer adventures, beach days, school essentials and a few fun extras.
-
Caps and bucket hats: Fun colours, cute prints or something simple they'll wear every day.
-
Swimmers or bikinis: A fresh pair for summer holidays.
-
Lunch bag: There are some gorgeous options in our insulated lunch bag collection. I'm loving the MontiiCo and Sachi prints!
-
Yeti: A colourful bottle for school, sport and days out.
-
Lunch box: A new bento-style lunch box in their favourite colour.
-
Beach towel: A fun striped or colourful beach towel.
-
Pool floatie: Something fun for lazy summer afternoons.
-
Swimming goggles: A practical stocking filler.
-
Rashie or long-sleeve swim top: Great for long days at the beach.
-
Beach bag or tote: For carrying all their summer essentials.
-
Hair accessories: Scrunchies, claw clips or headbands.
-
Waterproof jewellery: A little bracelet or necklace for everyday wear.
And of course, there's no reason boys can't love the colourful accessories or girls can't love fishing gear. It's all about what your kids enjoy!
A Christmas gift that doubles as a back-to-school essential
Here's one of my favourite mum hacks: Use Christmas to get a head start on back-to-school shopping.
With school starting again in January, it's the ideal time to gift something they'll need anyway.
A new lunch box, lunch bag or drink bottle might not sound like the most exciting present to us adults, but let them choose their favourite colour or print and suddenly it's a whole different story.
At Sinchies, we've got some fantastic options for bigger kids, including:
-
MontiiCo, b.box and Sachi lunch bags: Insulated options in loads of colours and prints.
-
Lunch boxes for bigger appetites: Great for growing kids who need more food to get through the school day.
-
Our full lunch box collection: Plenty of options for different ages, appetites and preferences.
It's one less thing to worry about when January rolls around!
My tip? Don't overcomplicate Christmas.
I'm a big believer that Christmas doesn't need to mean piles and piles of presents.
Some of the best gifts are things our kids will genuinely use, whether that's a new pair of boardies, a drink bottle, a fishing shirt or a lunch box they've picked out themselves.
And if we can tick a few back-to-school essentials off the list while we're at it? Even better!
Here's to a summer of swimming, fishing, beach days, making memories and hopefully a little less stress for us parents.
Happy Christmas shopping!
Ash x
