I’m not starting Term 4 without these lunchbox essentials

Term 4 brings warmer school days, busy afternoons and the daily question: What am I packing for lunch? I’m getting a few things ready now so the morning rush feels a little easier. Here’s what’s going into our lunchbox rotation.

1. A b.box lunch box that suits their appetite

Start with the kid who’s eating the lunch. A smaller appetite might need space for a few favourite foods, while a bigger eater may need room for a more substantial lunch and extra snacks.

Choose the b.box lunch box size based on how much your child actually eats during the school day, rather than how much you hope they’ll eat. There’s no point packing a huge lunch box if half of it comes home untouched.

2. An insulated lunch bag

Once you’ve chosen the lunch box, make sure the bag has room for it, an ice pack and any extra snacks. An insulated lunch bag keeps everything together for school and makes the morning pack-up a sinch.

3. A MontiiCo ice pack

I put the ice pack in the freezer the night before, then add it to the insulated lunch bag in the morning. It’s an essential part of our warmer-weather routine, especially when I’m packing chilled snacks such as yoghurt. Follow your school’s guidance for packing perishable food in the heat.

4. An insulated food jar

When the kids are over sandwiches, a food jar gives us another lunch option. Pasta, noodles or last night’s leftovers make a welcome change. If you’re packing a hot lunch, preheat the jar and use it according to its instructions.

5. Reusable yoghurt pouches

This is one of my favourite ways to make the week easier. I fill a few Sinchies with yoghurt from a larger tub and pop them in the fridge, ready to grab on school mornings. You can keep the yoghurt plain or mix in homemade fruit purée. The pouches are easy to fill and easy to clean.

It can save money, too. Compare the price per serve of a larger tub with individual yoghurt pouches next time you shop. Fill, wash and reuse your Sinchies, and you’ll use less single-use packaging along the way.

6. Homemade ice pops for after school

After a hot school day, having something cold waiting in the freezer is always a win. Fill reusable ice block pouches with a smoothie or blended fruit and freeze them for easy homemade ice pops. They’re also a fun way to use up fruit that needs eating.

That’s our Term 4 setup: a b.box lunch box sized for each child’s appetite, an insulated bag and ice pack, a food jar for lunch variety, yoghurt pouches in the fridge and ice pops in the freezer. A little prep now means less scrambling later.
